The Bakersfield Firefighters Historical Society (BFHS) is calling on the community to help reach its goal of 500 sponsored American flags for the Line of Honor, a city-wide tribute commemorating the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
Each $50 flag sponsorship honors a firefighter, first responder, military service member, or loved one. Every flag will proudly line Buena Vista Road on September 11, 2026, each bearing the name of an honoree as part of a breathtaking visual display of unity and remembrance.
Funds raised will support the 25th anniversary of 9/11 ceremonies and the BFHS’s mission to preserve the history and legacy of Bakersfield’s firefighters, including museum exhibits, engine restoration, and educational programs that inspire future generations.
The vision of the BFD Museum is to house and display historical BFD artifacts and equipment. Our plan is to set the museum up as a “walk through time”. We would like to set up different zones according to the eras of equipment and apparatus. For example, the 1905 Horse-drawn Ladder will be housed in an area that represents how a firehouse looked back in 1905. This will allow visitors to step back in time and see how the fire service has changed over the years. This museum will be open to the public for everyone to enjoy!
Our History
The Bakersfield Fire Department (BFD) was formally established on May 13, 1877, as the official Fire Department of the City of Bakersfield. The Department has been in continual operation since its inception date and has evolved as a progressive fire agency protecting the city and greater metropolitan area.
